WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- A study published in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association is putting the gender pay gap in some stark terms.

Researchers found that over the course of a career, the difference in what female physicians and scientists are paid versus their male counterparts could pay for a college education, a spacious house or a retirement nest egg.

The difference works out to about $12,000 a year.
