COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- A woman was sexually assaulted after she and others were swimming, in their underwear, in a fountain at the University of Maryland.
It happened early Saturday morning, at around 12:35, when police say they got a call about an incident that happened around midnight.
"A group of female students had stripped down to their underwear and were swimming in the McKeldin Mall fountain. They placed their clothing and property alongside the fountain," police said in the "campus alert," that was sent out at around 3:00 a.m.
That's when a group of about eight to 10 males and females approached the fountain and started taking the clothing and property left by the swimmers, police said.
"One of the victims also reported that one of the males had grabbed her buttocks during the incident. The group of thieves fled from the area, leaving a trail of the victims' property, which ended near the Mowatt Lane Garage. While a good portion of the victims' property has been recovered, there are still a few items that have not been recovered," police said.
Campus police are still investigating the incident, that they are calling a "sex assault and theft."
