WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - Whenever someone moans about the proliferation.of speed cameras in DC, the reply is almost always the same and almost irrefutable. Don't Speed and you won't get a ticket.
And it is hard to argue it's okay to go 11 miles over the limit, the threshold for earning one of these auto-citations. Understand, this is the holy grail for DC government, a hefty tax that no one can really complain about.
But leave it to our beloved government to take even a good thing too far.. Triple A now says the city has already raked in 40-million dollars this fiscal year in automated ticket fines and in the new budget, they doubled the number of cameras.
And keep in mind those robo-cops will hit you up for $125 minimum, three times what they charge in Montgomery County where far as I know, speeders are just as deadly.
Chief Cathy Lanier says it's about slowing drivers down, not raking in money, except it seems when traffic slows down and revenue inevitably dips, then there are more speed cameras and higher fines.
Let's be real: right now the District has a vested interested in two conflicting goals.T he cops want the slower, safer traffic. While the politicians are addicted to the easy money from speeders. Sooner or later something has gotta give.
