BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA) -- Maryland Transit authorities report traffic light damage and lanes blocked in both directions on Rockville Pike at Cedar Lane in Montgomery County, Md. They are encouraging drivers to use alternate routes.
We are told that drivers are having trouble getting to Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, which has graduation today. Officials say that there is access to the school by taking Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park to get to Cedar Lane.
A witness tells us a crew working at the intersection of Route 355 and Cedar Lane apparently cut the wrong cable and all the lights normally suspended above the intersection came crashing down to the ground.
Power went out for the surrounding traffic lights and businesses.
Vehicles in the area when the lights hit the ground reportedly started driving around the downed lights.
