WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - In what is being called one of the biggest crackdowns in US Transportation history, the government shut down 26 bus operations today.
Many of those bus run between Washington and New York City.

Karuna Nanda is a Buddhist monk on his way to New York --- who found the door caged shut -- and a hand-scrawled sign -- when he showed up at the New Century bus office on H street in Chinatown today to catch his bus

Which is how Nanda and other travelers found their way 2 blocks down H street to Eastern Travel, a curbside bus operator still in business today.

Eastern picked up the slack today after New Century and 25 other bus operators were shut down by the US Department of Transportation today over an alleged pattern of egregious safety violations.

Like a crash on I-95 north of Richmond last year that killed four and injured 54. Operator Sky Express is still in business even with 54 citations for driver fatigue. The company reopened within days after the crash, under another name.

The industry's trade group applauded the federal crackdown.
And today -- even surprised stranded travelers in Chinatown said it's about time..
