BETHESDA, Md., (WUSA) -- "I'm getting rid of it," Corrian Atwell says.
Her 40 year old upright freezer no longer does what she needs it to do.
"It didn't freeze terribly well," she says.
But instead of carting it off to the dump, the Bethesda homeowner called Pepco to take it away and reap a cash reward at the same time.
"We actually come out, take your appliance and we'll pay you $50," says spokesperson Amy Friess.
The local utility has just launched its appliance recycle program. Maryland residents can earn money when they get rid of an old refrigerator, freezer or window air conditioner.
The goal is to get customers to upgrade to more energy efficient appliances, and that in turn, will reduce their costs.
Pepco's Friess says, "When there's these really older appliances that are in homes, they're using three times the energy of appliances that are energy efficient. They can save up to $150 dollars on their energy bill."
Pepco has partnered with a local recycling company that will come to your home at a scheduled time to remove the unwanted appliance.
The workers will snap a picture, slice the seal, cut the cord and load it up to be recycled.
"They're being taken care of and taken away, and disposed of properly," says Friess.
For Corrian it's a win-win. She'll receive her rebate in the mail in four to six weeks.
Pepco's appliance recycling program is currently only offered to Maryland residents.
They can recycle up to two refrigerators and two freezers to receive a $50 rebate on each one.
And, they can recycle up to two window air conditioning units to get $25 on each one.
The rebate rewards could add up to a grand total of $150.
