  • D.C. legend Chuck Brown, the "Godfather of Go-Go" died at 75.
  • Pulitzer Prize-winning NY Times journalist Anthony Shadid died at the age of 43 on Feb. 16, from an asthma attack while covering the uprisings in the Middle East
  • American newspaper reporter Marie Colvin was killed while covering the ongoing uprising in Syria on Wed., Feb. 22, 2011. She had appeared on CNN's 'Anderson Cooper 360' just hours before her death.
  • Jan Berenstain and her husband created the beloved Berenstain Bears books.
  • Gene Vance played for the the NBA's Chicago Stags as well as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks and Milwaukee Hawks - both earlier versions of today's Atlanta Hawks - in the late 40s and early 50s. Vance died at the age of 88 on Feb. 16.

  • 'The Senator,' a 3,500 year-old cypress tree in Seminole County, Fla., burned to a stump on Jan. 16. 'The Senator' was believed to be the fifth-oldest tree in the world.

  • Zalman King was a television actor in the 60s and 70s before finding success behind the camera as a film and TV director, best known for directing 9 1/2 Weeks and his 90s Showtime series Red Shoe Diaries. King died on Feb. 3.
  • Singer Etta James died at at the age of 73 on Jan. 20.
  • Joe Paterno was dismissed from his position as Penn State's head football coach amid the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. Paterno died Jan. 22 from lung cancer.

  • Florence Green was the last known surviving veteran from World War I when she died in eastern England on Feb. 4.
  • Stage, film and television actor Ben Gazzara died Feb. 3.
  • Pop singer Leslie Carter was best known as sister of singers Nick and Aaron Carter. She also appeared on the family's reality show House of Carters in 2006. Leslie Carter died from a drug overdose on Jan. 31 at the age of 25.
  • British actor Ian Abercrombie was known to American audiences for roles in Seinfeld and Birds of Prey, along with many voice-over parts including most recently the Cartoon Network series The Clone Wars. Abercrombie died from kidney failure on Jan. 26. (Getty Images)
  • CNN and Turner Sports commentator Jim Huber was also a sports reporter with 11Alive in the 80s, prior to joining CNN. Huber died in Atlanta on Jan. 2 from leukemia.
  • Musician and music producer Johnny Otis was dubbed 'Godfather of Rhythm and Blues' for his work at bringing R&B to mainstream audiences in the 40s and 50s. He died on Jan. 17.

  • Boxing trainer Angelo Dundee worked with Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman and many other noted boxers over the course of his career. Dundee died at the age of 90 on Feb. 1.
  • Former Supreme Court nominee Robert H. Bork died at age 85
  • Carrol Walsh, World War II veteran from New York who helped liberate thousands of Holocaust victims from a Nazi train, dies at age 91
  • Actor James Farentino appeared in dozens of film and television roles in the 60s through the 90s, winning an Emmy for his portrayal of Saint Peter in the 70s miniseries Jesus of Nazareth. Farentino died January 24 at the age of 73.
  • Andy Griffith (L) died at age 86
  • Writer Michael Ybarra died on June 30, a result of injuries from a fall he suffered at Yosemite National Park. (Wall Street Journal)
