BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA)- A 17-year-old built a three-wheel hybrid electric car in an attempt to travel from New York to Washington on one gallon of gasoline. He completed his trip in 12 hours, arriving back in D.C. on Monday afternoon. He made the trip on 1.25 gallons of gasoline.

Rami Bedewi, who is a student at Georgetown Prep, said there is no radio or music player in the car, but it did meet safety standards in Virginia for a one day permit. He traveled 35 miles per hour and drove mostly on back roads for the trip, leaving Jersey City at 5:30 a.m. on Monday. He even had a webcam hooked onto the car. Most of the parts were donated and he had sponsors to help build the $15,000 car. He demonstrated to 9News Now how the electric motor powers the wheels. The gasoline engine served as a generator to charge the battery. He's applying to universities, and plans to major in engineering.

His parents also made the trip with him, a driving convoy with his mother in front and his dad behind.
