Md. Schools No. 1 In Advanced Placement Success For 4th Year In A row

BALTIMORE (WUSA) - The Maryland State Department Of Education announced Wednesday that Maryland education was ranked number one in the College Board's annual report on the Advanced Placement (AP) program.

The state department of education says that 27.9 percent of Maryland seniors who get a score of 3 or higher on one or more AP exams in 2011. It is the highest percentage in the nation for the fourth consecutive year. That percentage is also 1.5 percentage points better than 2010, according to the College Board's "Annual AP Report to the Nation."

High schools students get college credit for having an AP score of 3 or higher.

Maryland placed second to Florida in the total percentage of seniors completing an AP exam: 46.4 percent to 74.4, respectively.

Last month, Maryland schools ranked first in the nation by Education Week's "Quality Counts" report for the fourth straight year.

According to the department of education, all 24 Maryland school systems have at least a 20 percent participation rate among high school seniors, and 16 districts have 30 percent or greater.  Calvert, Frederick, Howard, and Montgomery had at least 30 percent of their graduating classes scoring a 3 or better on an AP exam.
