WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- The self-proclaimed presidential historian and art collector Barry Landau pleaded guilty Tuesday to his role in stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in historical documents and art.

Last year, federal agents seized national treasures from his Manhattan home like, letters from Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Karl Marx and FDR.

Many of the documents came from the Maryland Historical Society. The entire plot was exposed when a historical society employee spotted Landau's accomplice James Savedoff stealing documents.

Savedoff pleaded guilty in the heist last year.
