Police say 22-year-old Victor M. Aldana is charged with DUI Manslaughter, DUI Maiming, Reckless Driving and No Operators License after a fatal accident Sunday afternoon. He is being held without bond.
According to police, the car was coming up on the overpass to Interstate 395 when the 1994 Honda Accord jumped the curb, and hit a mother and son who were walking along a sidewalk next to Duke Street near Landmark Mall. It is a popular path for residents of the area, though it has no cross walks over the exit and entrance ramps of I-395.
Alexandria Police say the boy, identified Brian Hernandez-Chavez of the Lincolnia area, was killed instantly and the mother was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she is being treated for non life threatening injuries.
The crash reconstruction marks indicate that after the car struck the mother and son, it jump another curb and a drainage ditch, then had enough momentum to travel about 100 yards. It careened down a hill and into a traffic control box, then smashed into a guardrail along I-395.
If the guardrail hadn't stopped the car, it could've barreled onto I-395 killing more people. The driver stayed on the scene after the collision.
Alexandria police say this is the first fatal pedestrian crash of the year in Alexandria.
