The Metro Bus driver had to be extricated with heavy equipment, for about an hour after the crash.

A Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman says three other people were seriously injured in the crash.

The accident took place at Rockville Pike and Elsmere Ave. Police say that a northbound Metro bus and a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck traveling south collided. The male driver of the pickup truck suffered fatal injuries.

Rockville Pike (Route 355) is closed in both directions at Pooks Hill Rd. and Cedar Lane as a result of the crash. Officials are asking everyone to avoid the area.

Police say they are treating patients from "the walking wounded, all the way to trauma cases." Some were treated at the scene and released.

A crane was needed for the bus due to entrapment. A helicopter was requested to get at least one patient out.

Dan Stessell with Metro says this is bus number 6206 on the J-9 route. The destination was Lake Forest Mall.
