FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) -- Big changes could be coming to Fairfax County Schools after this election.
With only four of the 12 incumbents seeking re-election, the new board could bring in a new agenda.
Seven candidates are running for the three at large school board seats and only one of them is an incumbent.
"My experience matters," Incumbent Ilryong Moon said. "It's very valuable."
Over the past few years, a number of issues turned some parents against the school board.
"Then, over a series of missteps one after another," Republican endorsed candidate Elizabeth Schultz said.
Schultz and Lin Dai Kendall decided to run for the board after it closed Cliftton Elementary School.
For candidate Steven Stuban, it was his son's suicide after harsh treatment from the system's discipline policy. His slogan: "Every Student Matters."
"It's about changing this from a purely punitive system to one that seeks to re-habilitate the children, the student," Stuban said.
Class sizes and a staffing formula that sends more teachers to needy schools is another hot button topic. All of the newcomers to the race say they want an independent auditor to find more cost savings in the School system's $2.2 billion budget.
Incumbent Dan Storck says no more significant cuts can be made, except those straight to the classrooms.
"We can't afford to keep cutting the budget and expect a better outcome," Storck said. "We've been doing it for the past four years and we've had great outcomes, but we can't continue to do that and not harm the quality of schools."
General election polls open at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8.
