WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA)-- A recent viral video on Takethatlollipop.com has reached more than 2 million views, and it's aiming to warn people of stalking dangers by the overuse or misuse of social media.
The public service announcement, which uses your Facebook information, depicts a macabre looking man sifting through your pictures and personal information. The stalker then finds his way to your house and the video goes black.
Although the video is fake, the message is very much real. It's intended to give people a wake-up call and alert over indulgers of social media that publicizing to much can make you a vulnerable target for stalkers.
Independent Cyber Consultant Dr. Tom Piwowar said: "Absolutely, you have to think twice before you post anything."
Powowar who also saw the PSA says nowadays there are too many choices and platforms as it relates to social media. He said constantly posting pictures, updating status, over tweeting, and publishing every moment of your life makes it easy for someone to exploit your privacy.
He said, "Somebody can take that tweet, match it up to your Facebook, they can figure out where you live."
He added the future of social media is here to stay and people need to be very careful of how they behave and use such tools.
Piwowar said, "Things are moving really quickly, and for somebody who is not a technologist and doesn't know what's inside the box it's going to be very hard to figure out what's going on."
