WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Prince George's County Councilmember Leslie Johnson was not in the courtroom when her husband, former County Executive Jack Johnson, entered guilty pleas to corruption on Tuesday.
She was on the dais for an important legislative session. When it was over, she disappeared through a back door and stairs to avoid reporters who were waiting to ask about her husband's plea and her own case which has yet to be resolved.
Leslie Johnson is facing federal evidence tampering charges after flushing a $100,000 check down the toilet and stuffing another $80,000 in cash down her bra -- per her husband's instructions -- while the FBI listened in on their telephone conversation.
Prosecutors on Tuesday said Leslie Johnson's case is not connected to Jack Johnson's case. An attempt perhaps to clear up speculation that Jack Johnson's plea on Tuesday was meant, in part, to keep his wife out of prison. Speculation also said Leslie Johnson would resign her council position.
Thus far, neither has happened. It's unclear when Leslie Johnson will have her day in court.
