BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA) -- Montgomery County police are searching for a man who stole two iPads during a Craiglist transaction this past weekend in North Bethesda.

A North Bethesda man placed an ad recently on Craigslist to sell two brand new iPads for $850 each. He says it seemed like a good idea at the time but his good idea quickly went south on Saturday when he says a young man showed up at his house. After being shown the iPads, he says the young man simply grabbed them, dashed out the door and took off down the street.

The man says, "I was chasing him for about 500 yards and I was screaming 'theft.'"

The suspect is described as a white male with very short blond hair, 20-25 years old, 5'8" tall, and weighing approximately 160 pounds.

Montgomery County Police says nobody's been arrested so far but they have a number of good leads and there is at least one suspect.

They also say this isn't the first Craigslist-related robbery in Montgomery County and, as a result, they would strongly encourage anyone who's selling anything online to follow a few simple rules.

  • Meet the person in a public place
  • Never give out your home address
  • Make the transaction in daylight
  • Have a family member or friend with you
  • Let a friend or family member know where you are and who you're seeing
  • Before starting any transaction with a person you've met online, always make sure to see some type of government-issued ID.

If you have information on the iPad robbery, call the 2nd District Investigative section at 301-657-0112 or Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or 240-773-TIPS (8477).
