ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA) --- More than 70 million users of Sony's PlayStation network have been doing without the service for a week but only learned Tuesday the network is down because of a serious hacking attack that compromised the names, home addresses, e-mail addresses, birth dates, and passwords of the network's users.

Brian Heise told 9NEWS NOW he is "very disappointed it has taken Sony six days to let us know what is really going on."

In a statement, Sony said it has no evidence credit card information has been stolen as well but said it could not be ruled out.

"If you have the same password on your PlayStation profile as you do on your e-mail address, your online banking, any other accounts, you should pro-actively change that password. Information that was taken could be sold to people maliciously trying to gain access to your information and you need to proactively prevent that," said Nick Fitzsimmons of X3o Emerging Technologies in Rockville.

"The check card I used for payments is only used for PSN. My password is not used anywhere else. That being said....Sony has taken incompetence to new and exciting heights," said Joe Westner.

Other users had more reason for concern.

"Yes. I have already changed my account information and password," said Ross Wilson.

PlayStation provides a network that allows users to play online games with others around the world and to download movies through services such as NetFlix.

The network is down and undergoing repairs designed to make hacking more difficult.

"Other people have attacked and taken a small sector down but this is a complete outage effecting all users, setting a precedent for how severe it is," said Fitzsimmons.

Worried their information may be compromised, some users have canceled credit cards or asked credit reporting agencies to increase scrutiny by putting them on a higher fraud alert.
