BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA) -- Marshall Moneymaker is known as the pink firefighter. Now, he has gear to match.

As a surprise, his colleagues presented him with bright pink turnouts and a pink firefighter's helmet.

"This comes from my shifts, my superiors, my officers, it actually touches my heart a lot," Moneymaker said.

It's not safe enough to wear on calls, but Moneymaker says he'll wear it to community events and demonstrations.

Moneymaker says he plans to wear the uniform to honor his three sisters he lost to breast cancer: Vicky, Valessa, and Penny.

He became involved with breast cancer awareness when survivors walked by Fire Station 6 during the Susan G. Komen 3 Day For The Cure. It was a way for Moneymaker to cope with the loss of his sisters.

He hopes that by seeing him wearing pink, others will be encouraged to get checked.

"I think that earlier detection for my sisters would have made a difference. If they caught it sooner, their lives would have lasted a lot longer," he said.
