MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA) -- Three weeks ago, Trooper E.D. Brown was confined to a hospital bed.

Trooper Brown was mere inches from dying after he responded to a crash on I-95 near the Prince William County Parkway. A tractor trailer rammed into a car slowing to pass the accident.  That car came barreling toward the trooper.  The tractor trailer driver was charged with reckless driving.

The 'Move Over' law in Virginia was just ammended this past summer to include not just red and blue lights but also flashing amber lights for construction workers and tow truck drivers.

"To think one day I was here, the next day I could've been gone. My wife could have been planning a funeral," Trooper Brown said. "I looked over towards me. I jumped straight up."

He avoided getting pinned in but rolled onto the car. His head slammed against the car windshield.

There was a huge gash on his leg that's healing. Remarkably he only had a broken jaw and a few teeth knocked out.

He holds his family a little tighter these days and is looking forward to becoming a father again; his wife is two months pregnant.

Even with all that he's been through, Trooper Brown says he wants to get back to work. "I want to get back to the road. I love my job. It's what I do."
