WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Police say the woman responsible for crashing her vehicle into two pedestrians in Adams Morgan Wednesday night was under the influence of alcohol.
Two women were badly injured when a car jumped the curb of a pedestrian island at 18th Street and Florida Avenue, NW, struck them, and then crashed into a nearby restaurant.
The accident happened at about 8:45 when the car appeared to swerve to avoid an oncoming vehicle. Witnesses say that is when the driver lost control and hit the women.
Lt. Nick Bruel, spokesperson for DC Police, says the driver was arrested at the scene and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. Bruel says the suspected drunk driver, a 23-year-old woman from Mitchellville, Maryland, may end up facing more charges. Police have not released her name.
Pete Piringer, spokesperson for DC Fire and EMS, says both women were transported to a nearby hospital with traumatic injuries. Bruel says one of the victims is in critical condition while the other is listed in serious, but stable condition.
The restaurant, Keren, has been run by the same family for 26 years. It serves African food, doing a busy lunch business, but had closed for the day about 45 minutes before the accident.
None of the staff members who remained in the restaurant was injured. A structural engineer was inspecting the scene Wednesday evening to determine if it safe to enter the building.
