WASHINGTON DC (WUSA) -- One of the most popular ways to visit the National Zoo involves never leaving your desk.  The Zoo has pioneered the use of web cameras to show off its animals - with some shots you would never be able to see in person.

Here are some of the highlights of the cameras:

  • Cheetah Cam: check out the East African savanna habitat
  • Naked Mole Rat Cam: see a look at animals you'd normally have to crawl underground to view
  • Octopus Cam: Go into the deep for an eight-legged view
  • Panda Cam: the one which started the craze

The National Zoo has long been using its web cameras to show off its animals.  "For us, it really started with the pandas," said National Zoo Director Dennis Kelly, who adds "one of my favorite cameras is the naked mole rat camera.  It gets right down into the home of the naked mole rat.  It's an an eye level."

The National Zoo has many more cameras set up, and it has links to them all on itsZoo Cam web page.
