2 die in car crash in Fairfax

MERRIFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- Two people died in an accident on Old Lee Highway at Hilltop Road after a police pursuit on Monday morning.

The accident was reported to authorities at 1:50 a.m.

Fairfax County Police officials say that a police officer called dispatch to report that he was attempting to pull over a suspected DWI. Officials say as the officer tried to make the stop on Hilltop Road the suspect vehicle fled and the officer gave pursuit.

The suspect car crashed at Old Lee Highway and Hilltop Road, running off the road and hitting a tree. The driver and one passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, say officials. Police say all of the occupants of the vehicle were men.

Police say it appears that alcohol and speed were factors in the crash but they are still investigating the incident.
