Shopping For Electronics

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Pretty soon, the annual crush of shoppers will hit the stores looking to spread holiday cheer.

Iphones, Wii, GPS devices, oh wait, that was last year's list.

"You don't really have, you know, the brand new must have gadget, the way we had in recent seasons," says Paul Reynolds.

The Consumer Reports electronics editor says manufacturers did not unveil new high-priced buzz items this go round, because of the economy.

And, that may be a smart thing...just listen to what people told us about their plans for this year.

"I think I'm just gonna do something heartfelt," Madeline Smith says.

"I'm talking to my family about maybe we should  get a gift for one person," says Pooneh Miamabi.

If that one gift includes one of 2008s top picks.

Paul says, "In many cases, the prices are lower and the availability is also better."

Value is the buzzword for 2009.  And, the electronics testers at Consumer Reports showed our Living Smart team one way they determine which goods fit the bill.

On this day, they checked out which flat screen stand and deliver the best picture quality.

"It's good but for $1700, I'd expect more," says Jim Langehennig.

"We found in our roundup in their December issue more recommended models that are low priced than we ever have before," he adds.

One more note about your electronics.  Whether it's a new big screen or digital camera in your sight, make sure the person who receives the gift really wants what is in the box before they open it.

Most retailers charge restocking fees of up to 25 percent of the total cost, if you return the product after it has been opened.

Here's the good news.  You may not have to push and shove your way to this years' top electronics.

"I think it's kinda my big splurge," says Lucy Cooper.

Before you buy any electronic gadget, check for early sales and compare prices.

Make sure you know the store's return policy.

Don't rule out multi-tasking models.

And, skip the extended warranty.
