WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- We've put up the summer sandals and pulled out the fall foot wear.
The cold weather is here and you'll need a good boot to brave whatever comes our way. And, with so many styles for sale, the American Podiatric Medical Association's Erika Schwartz has tips to help you choose the perfect pair.
You don't have to sacrifice style when looking for a boot that is healthy for feet. Opting for safe heel height and adequate arch support and traction levels can make a trendy boot a foot-friendly one.
Price is not indicative of quality.
Be cautious of certain boot trends that expose toes, such as those that feature a "peep toe" design.
Avoid peep toes that are too tight around the toe box. This places pressure on the toes and could cause cramming, which can led to ingrown nails or neuroma. These can leave feet unprotected and vulnerable to injury when it's raining or snowing outside.
Choose a boot with plenty of toe room, a firm heel counter and traction to ensure stability.
Remember to moisturize feet during the fall and winter months.
Look for APMA's Seal of Acceptance on select brands of boots.
If you must wear boots with heels higher than two inches, wear them for a short periods of time. If walking long distances, wear walking shoes to and from your destination.
Boots should feel comfortable when tried on in the store; there shouldn't be a 'break-in" period. Breaking shoes in often equals blisters.
Rather than boots made of synthetic material, look for boots constructed with leather, which allow for proper airflow and keep feet dry.
Bring an insole with you to the store while trying on a boot, and always try boots on in the afternoon, as feet swell during the day.
Have feet measured, size can change throughout life. Keep in mind, your boot size may not fit the same in all styles and brands.
Buy for the larger foot, most feet are not the exact same size.
