ST. MARY'S CO., Md., (WUSA) -- If you get an automated call on your cell or home phone that says your debit, checking and other bank accounts have been compromised, hang up.

St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office warns crooks are running a scam to get your account and personal ID numbers.

Sheriff Timothy Cameron says the call appears from an "Unknown Caller' on your caller ID.

The recording says that for security purposes and to prevent further loss, your accounts have been deactivated. It then ask that you punch the number 1 to reach the security department and then enter in your account and personal ID numbers.

Once you fork over your personal information, the criminals use it to make fraudulent purchases using your accounts.

St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office says if you do receive this automated message, don't give out any personal information over the phone.

And, security experts also advise that you hang up and contact your bank immediately.
