BUFFALO, NY (WGRZ) -- There's a chill in the air and some may be turning on their furnaces or fireplaces. But a North Tonawanda mother wants to warn people after she had a scare with carbon monoxide.
Mary Czarnecki felt sick. She had blurry vision and headaches and her 6-year-old son was more tired than usual. Now, she realizes why.
It was carbon monoxide poisoning. Her fireplace had been converted from a regular fireplace to a gas fireplace and began leaking carbon monoxide.
She feels lucky a detector saved her life, but she wants others to realize the importance of having one and eventually would like to help by raising funds to give those who can't afford it their own detector.
This summer New York Governor Paterson signed "Amanda's Law", named after a 16-year-old West Seneca girl who died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a defective boiler. She was sleeping at a friend's house.
The law requires contractors who install new furnaces or hot water tanks to also install a carbon monoxide detector.
