But insure.com says consider these tips when buying a car for your teen.

Choose a midsized car with updated safety features, and avoid sports or high-performance cars.

Check the car's crash test ratings, whether it's new or used.

And, consider the costs of insurance, expect your premium to increase by as much as 100 percent.
