WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- "Things get overwhelming," says Steve Oatmeyer.
He knows the art of graphic design. But, bringing order to his bedroom is a bigger production.
"It's an armful," he says.
Scott Roewer helps people bring mountains of clutter down to size. The certified professional organizer knows he has some work to do in Steve's bedroom.
"When I'm working with someone who is not ready to let go that's the toughest thing," says Scott.
Steve is ready to let go, and with Scott's help, he'll transform his bedroom from storage room to sleeping sanctuary.
"That's very cute, but it doesn't belong at the back of your closet," Scott tells Steve after finding a childhood picture on the floor of the closet.
Once everything comes out, the stuff that stays, goes back in. And, purging is part of the process.
Scott says, "We made this sort of more with his dress clothes, his shirts, his slacks and then created shoe shelves. Before it was just a pile on the bottom."
His baseball hats got a new home too on an over the door rack. Curved hooks are installed for hanging too. And, what doesn't fit is packed and stored under Steve's bed.
"You now have a place to hang your shirts," Scott says. A valet stand becomes the new resting place for clothes Steve might wear later. And, for his dresser a different kind of catch all, a dresser valet and charging station.
"It's going to clean up all this up," says Scott.
He also saves space by putting his DVDs in a binder. And, after two days of purging and piling, Steve has a new room.
"It's like a breath of relief because now I know where everything is," he says. "And yes, I did find a couple of things that I didn't know I had.
The stuff Steve doesn't want goes to charity. Now to redo your room purge first, measure your space, and find storage options that work.
