WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- An incredible light show is coming to a neighborhood near you. Fourth of July brings great patriotic celebrations. But when it comes to fireworks, safety is key.

We teamed up with safety expert Alan Korn with Safe Kids USA to tell you how to enjoy the spectacle without getting hurt.

First, it's important to take note what the rules on lighting up are in your area.

Maryland: Certain fireworks are approved, others that explode are not. And, fireworks are banned in Prince George's, Harford, Montgomery and Howard counties. Also, if you're headed to the beach for the 4th of July, they are also banned in Ocean City.

DC: Certain fireworks are approved. Torches, box fire, fountains, cones and the like. But, fireworks that explode are banned.

Virginia: Allows most fireworks, to include sparklers, fountains, pinwheels and others. Bans fireworks that explode.

Korn believes fireworks are best left to professionals. But, if you just have to use them, he offers these tips to stay safe.

  • Never allow children to play with fireworks, period.

  • Light fireworks only on smooth flat surfaces and aim them away from buildings, dry leaves, flammable materials and of course, other people.

  • Do not try to relight fireworks that may malfunction.

  • Sign up for the Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall alerts so you can learn immediately when fireworks have been recalled.

  • Keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher and phone nearby just in case of a mishap.
