FAIRFAX, Va., (WUSA) -- Trash day in this Herndon, Virginia neighborhood is really worth it's weight.
One man's trash literally becomes his treasure when trucks pick it up to deposit into the Recycle Bank.
"If you provide financial incentives for people to recycle, you're really going to increase the participation," says Preston Read.
People here look forward to this weekly ritual. They set it and forget it.
Fairfax resident Bill Dingell says, "It's really sad taht it took an incentive for me and my family to do it but it worked. So, I think everybody wins. I have a 100 points right now in the bank,"
Points that he can use to buy groceries, gifts or other things online.
"The amount of stuff that goes into the recycling bin versus the regular trash has changed. And that's really made a big difference," says Bill.
He earns those points, when the trash trucks tallies his bottles, boxes and paper products, and adds them all up. All Bill Dingell has to do is click onto his Recycle Bank account to see his balance.
