
WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Smart labels for your food.
It's the future of food labeling, bar codes that tell consumers just how fresh that chicken, meat or milk really is.
The bar codes on these smart labels will have nearly invisible ink that will turn red when the food is no longer fresh, preventing the product from being scanned at the checkout counter.
This new technology is being developed by two University of Rhode Island professors and a food safety company.
