Cost of driving a car in DC: $2,283 a year

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- A report finds that Washington, D.C. is the 17th most expensive state or district to operate a vehicle. According to the report, it costs at $2,283 per year. The national average is $2,223.

According to, "The report accounted for the costs of gasoline, insurance and repairs in each state. Washington, D.C. drivers spend less on gas than anywhere else in the country, but they also have the second-highest car insurance rates in the nation."

Wyoming is the most expensive state to operate a motor vehicle. In Wyoming, a typical driver spends $2,705 per year to operate his or her vehicle. Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, and New Jersey round out the list of the five most expensive states.

Iowa is the cheapest state to operate a motor vehicle. In Iowa, the average driver spends $1,942 per year.
