Child car seat safety changes

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA9) -- It is the workhorse staple of childhood that carts our kids around safely.

Starting on Thursday, February 27, 2014, the makers of car seats will have to spell out their weight warnings more clearly on them.

They'll have to stamp those seats with a label that says the COMBINED weight of the seat may not exceed, say 65 pounds.

That means, parents need to weight both the seat and their child to determine if they are within the limits.

Many parents and caregivers don't realize that weight restriction involves the weight of the seat and the child.

And, if you go over the limits, the seat may not adequately protect your child int he event of a crash.
