The world has changed a lot since the last time a DC team made its league's semifinals

It's been 19 years since May of 1998, when the world was a simpler place and Washington, D.C. hadn't yet become the most tortured sports town in America.

That iPhone you're probably reading this on? It didn't exist yet. But the Washington Capitals? They were playing in the NHL's Eastern Conference Finals, where they would beat the Buffalo Sabres and advance to the Stanley Cup.

They didn't beat the Red Wings, but D.C. was abuzz. The Nationals weren't even in town yet -- hi, Montreal Expos! -- and the Redskins had fallen off since winning multiple Super Bowls under Joe Gibbs in the late 80s and early 90s.

Then it all came crashing down. No D.C.-based professional sports team has advanced to its league semifinals since (sorry, D.C. United. Major four sports only).
