Football helmets can crack and cause head injuries

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalls nearly 6,000 football helmets.

BETHESDA, Md., (WUSA) -- Twenty-nine reports of incidents involving Xenith football helmets has prompted a recall by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The shells in the Xenith Epic Varsity, X2 Varsity, X2E Varsity and Youth football helmets can crack and pose a risk of head injury for children.

Xenith sold about 5,900 of the helmets with gloss or metallic-painted polycarbonate shell, some of them were factory reconditioned.

CPSC Football Helmet Recall Notice

The football head gear was sold between May 1 2015 and March 18, 2016 through team dealers, direct school sales, BSN, Buddy's All Stars, Carey's Sporting Goods, End Zone Sports, Inc and other stores nationwide.

Online retailers Eastbay.com, Footlocker.com, SafetyFirstSports.com, SportsUnlimitedInc.com and Xenith.com sold the helmets from May 2015 through March 2016.

Parents, caregivers and coaches should stop allowing their players from using the recalled helmets immediately and contact Xenith to receive a new replacement helmet at no charge.

CPSC says there have been no reports of injuries.
