Senior citizen dies after Southeast, DC apartment fire

A woman has died after a fire in a southeast apartment complex Wednesday night.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — A woman has died after a fire in a Southeast, D.C. apartment complex Wednesday night.

Police say units were driving in the 3400 block of Minnesota Avenue SE when they noticed smoke coming from the lower apartments. Police officers attempted to get into the building but were unable to.

When DC Fire and EMS arrived on the scene, they entered the building and located a woman suffering from a medical emergency. Marian Coleman, 76, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

A second victim was also transported due to a medical issue caused by the fire.

All other occupants of the 12-unit building were evacuated safely but many were displaced due to damage and utilities being shut off.

Police do not suspect foul play.
