DC Goes Pink for breast cancer month

Mayor Muriel Bowser's office has a busy calendar of events for  Breast Cancer Awareness month! #DCGoesPink

The latest CDC statistics show the District of Columbia leading the nation in both breast cancer incidence rates (153.1 per 100,000 vs. the U.S. average of 122.0) and breast cancer mortality rates (26.3 per 100,000 vs. the U.S. average of 21.5).

Mayor Muriel Bowser's office is committed to connecting DC women to lifesaving screenings and educational materials offered by many government agencies and community partners.

Kimberly Bassett, Director for the DC Office on Women’s Policy and Initiatives (MOWPI) shares the following events for Breast Cancer Awareness month:

Wear it Pink Friday

October 20, 2017

MOWPI will promote Pink Friday on October 20th to various District Government agencies, where staffers will be asked to wear pink and post their photos on social media with our designated hashtag #DCGoesPink in honor of Breast Cancer awareness.

Bald Eagle Recreation Center--100 Joliet Street SW to Oxon Run Park—Wheeler Road SE

Since 2008, DPR’s recreation centers in Ward 8 have come together to celebrate the life of former DPR employee Ms. Diane Bushrod, who died from breast cancer in 2006. Ms. Bushrod, worked at Barry Farm Recreation Center, was a Ward 8 resident, native Washingtonian and an athlete.

Pamper Me Pink

On National Mammography Day, women are invited for a Mammogram “Pamper” Day with MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Breast Care for Washington and MOWPI. Attendees will enjoy light refreshments, pampering sessions, gifts and mammogram screenings. To register, please call 202-877-5929.

Her Story Matters

MOWPI is partnering with Health Alliance Network of Ward 7 to present “Her Story Matters”, an organization that focus on women’s health located east of the river -- honoring the stories, and triumphs over Breast Cancer by women from Wards 5, 7, and 8.
