Black Panther & more superheroes for kids of color

Great Day's Mom at the Movies Markette Sheppard lists superheroes for kids of color.

WASHINGTON — If the Black Panther movie and its record breaking $235 million box-office debut has you excited about seeing superheroes of color your children can look up to, and who reflect the multicultural world within which we live, then there are a few more to look out for in the movies, on TV and in your streaming lineup.

The Afro-Latino Spider-Man

It's the amazing Spider-Man like you've never seen him before because, well, you've never seen him with a curly afro. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is Marvel's next big foray into showcasing a comic book hero of color. His name is Miles Morales and he's coming to a theater near you in December of this year.

Cyborg on Teen Titans

On TV, elementary school-aged children may enjoy seeing Cyborg paling around with other adolescent heroes in the Cartoon Network series, Teen Titans. Cyborg is a brown-skinned teen robot who's more interested in pizza and video games than in fighting crime. His laid-back nature can teach your kids it's more fun to be a lover, instead of a fighter.

Ricardo Perez on Stretch Armstrong

Netflix also has a plethora of multicultural cartoons, including Stretch Armstrong & the Flex Fighters, featuring Ricardo Perez, a.k.a. Omni Mass . Ricardo gained stretchy superpowers after being exposed to experimental chemicals along with his two best friends, the Flex Fighters. Specifically, Ricardo can change his size and mass.

Markette Sheppard is host of Great Day Washington and an avid movie lover. Superheroes dominate the small screen at home where she lives with her 4-year-old comic book loving son and husband.
