National Zoo shows off baby Dama gazelles

(WUSA9) -- The Smithsonian's National Zoo showed off some new photos of three male Dama gazelles born last month.

The calves were born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va. on Feb. 18, Feb. 20 and Feb. 25, say officials.

Officials tell us the first weighed 11 pounds and the second and third calves weighed 12 pounds each at their 24-hour neonatal exam.

According to zoo officials, Dama gazelles are the rarest of all gazelles and are listed as critically endangered. They used to dwell across northern Africa, but their population is now limited to Chad, Mali and Niger.
