NH $487M Powerball winners stay anonymous, donate to charity

NH Powerball Winners

CONCORD, NH  -- The winner of the $487 million Powerball jackpot has claimed the winnings in New Hampshire. The winning ticket was sold at the Hannaford Supermarket in the town of Raymond on July 30.

People have been wondering since that time who the lucky person is. And we still don’t know. The owner of that lucky ticket has done an incredible job of keeping the news under wraps.

Monday an attorney representing the winner announced that a trust has been set up for the winner and the money was distributed into that fund last week. The winner bought a ticket with five wagers on it. One of the numbers hit big, in fact it was the second largest individual jackpot in world lottery history. That means only one person won the entire thing. It wasn’t shared with other winners or other people in on the ticket.

The winner opted for a lump sum which amounts to $341 million before taxes, $256 million after Uncle Sam took his cut. The attorney announced the winner is donating 100-thousand dollars to six local charities, the start of what’s expected to be an on-going philanthropic campaign.

“As evident from our presence the winners would like to preserve their anonymity at this point in time they are committed to using these funds for philanthropic causes and to make a positive impact on the lives of their family,” said winner's attorney William Shaheen.

“In 50 some odd years of being a lottery this is the biggest when we've had in our history in fact the amount of money in question is more money than we gave away all last year,” said NH Lottery Executive Director Charlie McIntyre.

Earlier officials at the Hannaford in Raymond announced they were donated the money won for selling the ticket $75,000 plus they added another $25,000 to it.

Donations announced by the winner’s attorney matched those donations. Five out of the six organizations receiving the money work to feed the hungry.
