Recipe: Cherry barbecue sauce

Cherry BBQ Sauce (Makes 1 quart)


  • 2 oz. butter
  • 2 cups diced onion
  • 1 T. garlic puree
  • 1 T. chili powder
  • 1 tsp.paprika
  • ¼ tsp. ground cloves
  • 2 T. dried tarragon
  • ½ tsp. black pepper
  • 2 cups pitted cherries with juice
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1/8 cup molasses
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 T. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 T. Dijon mustard


  1. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over high heat. Add onion and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes, until translucent. Stir in the next 5 ingredients and briefly sauté. Add cherries and ketchup and mix well.
  2. Reduce heat; add brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and mustard. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and let rest for 10 minutes. Cool in an ice bath.
  3. Use as a sauce for pork or chicken. Refrigerate any extra and use within 3-4 days.
