WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - Inspection reports obtained by Nine Wants to Know show health department closures at a major D.C. hospital, in Adams Morgan, in Montgomery County and in Eastern Market with violations ranging from mice and roaches to licensing.
Suspension inside hospital
Inside Sibley Memorial Hospital inspectors cited 9 violations at an Au Bon Pain kiosk -including chicken salad and grilled chicken out of safe temperature range, no proof on workers' transmittable disease status, and operating without a manager certified in food safety.
"That was not the reason for the closing," said Amanda Brown, spokewoman for Sibley's food contractor, Eurest. "All items cited on the report have been rectified."
In a report released to WUSA 9, the District of Columbia Health Department specified the reason for closure as "operating a food establishment without a valid license issued by the mayor. "
Although the other violations are noted on the same inspection report from Sibley's Au Bon Pain Kiosk, in Eurest's statement, Brown stated the closure was soley "due to lack of business license and not due to any sanitation or food related issues."
Roaches in doughnut equipment
At Yummy Donuts, 7244 Muncaster Mill Rd, Derwood, Md., when we
arrived, customers were praising the taste and wiping crumbs from their
face.
Inspectors cited roaches in the doughnut equipment, mice feces on the floor and walls, and a fly infestation in the kitchen.
"They were pretty good in hindsight, I don't know," said one customer after seeing the violations.
"It's probably some sort of misunderstood," said Yummy owner Yanny Bender. "Well, we have to work more on that."
Bender said workers missed health department deadlines, because they took extra days to clean.
Inspection
reports indicate health officials had identified many of the same
problems in a previous inspection and warned the donut store to correct
the mouse, roach, and fly problems.
Bender said they were working to comply when inspectors returned.
"That's
why when they say we're going to open in five days, we're take an extra
few days to complete with rules and regulations we have to do it,"
Bender said.
She said they're making changes and improving food safety.
Adams Morgan suspension
In Adam's Morgan, inspectors suspended Bistro 18, 2420 18th St. NW, citing rats rummaging in outside trash, no certified food safety manager and operating without hot water.
Inspectors also closed Fasil Ethiopian, 1608 7Th St. NW, for no hot water. At the address cited in the suspension, signage identifies the restaurant as Uptown Ethiopian. A manager said the restaurant is licensed under the name Fasil.
Eastern Market Closure
In Eastern Market, at Tunnicliff's Tavern, 222 7th St. SE, inspectors cited roaches, mice and workers touched ready to eat food with bare hands.
The manager of Tunnicliffs declined an interview, but he did invite 9 Wants to Know inside, behind the bar, and into the kitchen.
We observed no signs of mice or roaches and identified no violations.
Inspectors shut down food service inside Montana Liquors on Montana Avenue, 1801 Montana Ave NE , citing vermin and no hot water.
Logan Circle closure
In Logan Circle, at Caribou Coffee, 1400 14Th St. NW , the health department cited roaches and 8 other violations in a suspension.
Yummy's passed re-inspection as did the others and they're all back in business.
