WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - Red Alert for Sunday, Yellow Alert on Monday in the First Alert Weather Center. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 8am Sunday until 10am Monday for I-95 and points west. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the District and for all counties east of I-95, including Southern Maryland and the Northern Neck of Virginia.
After a colder and breezy Saturday, a storm will approach from the south early on Sunday morning. Cold air will be in place, leading to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain through Sunday night.
The mix will eventually change to rain in southern Maryland in the late afternoon or evening but elsewhere the surface temperatures remain at or below freezing, possibly allowing ice to accumulate on trees and power lines. Be careful walking to get the Sunday paper. Temps could remain below freezing from DC, N & W all of Sunday night and even into Monday morning.
Both the Redskins and Ravens have home games on Sunday. You can watch the Redskins game right here on WUSA 9 at 1 PM as they host the Kansas City Chiefs. Allow yourself plenty of extra travel time if you are heading to either stadium on Sunday. We have issued a Red Alert for Sunday because of the wintry mix and the possibility of icing.
The BB & T Classic is also being played at the Verizon Center Sunday.
