WASHINGTON - When you think of Oscar contenders you may think of dramas that make you cry, but not movies that make you cry of laughter.
Girls Trip was the No. 1 comedy of the summer and it's still a big deal heading into winter. The film is on track to make close to $150 million dollars internationally by the end of the year.
Starring heavy-hitter actresses like Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Regina Hall, it was newcomer Tiffany Haddish who stole the show, making her the breakout film star of 2017.
After the New York Film Critics Circle Awards last night, there is now buzz that Haddish may just be in the running for an Academy Award nomination. Haddish won best supporting actress at Thursday night's ceremony and it's a high enough honor that some voting members of the Academy will now consider the no-holds barred comedienne for an Oscar, according to insiders at the Hollywood Reporter.
Markette Sheppard is host of Great Day Washington and your resident "Mom at the Movies." She is also a wife, mother of a rambunctious 4-year-old and avid film lover. You can see more of her movie previews and reviews weekdays at 9 am.
