WASHINGTON - Would you lose weight for a job? Kirsten Dunst tells Variety magazine that she said no to director Sofia Coppola when asked to shed a few pounds for her upcoming role in The Beguiled, due out June 30.
The two women have a “sisterly” relationship that goes back 20 years, according the magazine. Sofia Coppola, 46, thought nothing of it when she mentioned to her friend and employee on the movie set that she might want to consider working out while shooting in Louisiana. But Dunst, who is half way through her 30s, shot her down. Lucky for Dunst, she secured the role anyway.
“It’s so much harder when you’re 35 and hate working out,” Dunst told Variety. In rural Louisiana, continued Dunst, it’s even harder. “I’m eating fried chicken and McDonald’s before work. So I’m like, ‘We have no options! I’m sorry I can’t lose weight for this role.’”
It’s a well-received message for even Coppola. The Oscar-winning director praises Dunst in the role and for her honesty. “I just like casting her in this...” says Coppola, who also wrote the new screenplay version of this 1971 film remake.
The Beguiled is an independent film about an all-girls school in Virginia who takes in a wounded soldier during the Civil War, only to have their campus taken over by sexual tension, rivalries and war. Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning also star in the film.
