Hurricane Irma has grown into a rare and powerful Category 5 hurricane. Although only three hurricanes have ever made landfall in the United States as Category 5 storms, there have been many others that have formed and stayed only over the ocean.
Some hurricanes were Category 5 hurricanes prior to making landfall in the United States (such as Isabel in 2003 and Katrina in 2005). While we don’t know what Hurricane Irma’s final track will be, we do know that Irma is a very powerful hurricane worthy of our full attention.
