Fatal pedestrian collision causes partial closure of ICC in Silver Spring

Drivers spotted the crash victim in the westbound lanes of Intercounty Connector early Tuesday morning.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — A pedestrian was struck along the westbound lanes of the ICC in Silver Spring early Tuesday morning, according to Maryland Transit Administration Police.

MTA is investigating the early morning fatal pedestrian collision that has now caused traffic delays in the westbound lanes of the ICC/Rt. 200 between Layhill Road and Georgia Avenue.

Around 3:30 a.m., MTA police received calls reporting a pedestrian lying in the roadway, police said. When officers arrived in the area they found an adult victim who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the status of the striking vehicle is unknown at this time.

As of 7 a.m., the westbound lanes of the ICC are closed between Layhill Road and Georgia Avenue. Westbound traffic is being diverted at Exit 10. Eastbound traffic is unaffected.

A Collision Reconstruction Unit is at the scene for the investigation, which is likely to cause a prolonged closure.

MTA Police have not released the identity of the victim, which is pending notification of next of kin.
