Washington Redskins Tight End Vernon Davis will hold the Vernon's Closet clothes drive Friday evening, Sept. 8, to help raise awareness about homelessness.

The event at the Covenant House in Southeast, D.C. is also a kick off to "Sleep Out America 2017," an annual, nationwide affair that encourages people to sleep outside one night a year and raise funds for homeless children. The event will be Nov. 16.

The former Terp says he decided to do this clothing drive because he knows, "what it's like to not have clothes and when you have clothes, you're more comfortable."

Dr. Madye Henson, the CEO of Covenant House says having Davis in person to talk about the topic that many others have, means everything.

"It makes a difference in the voice who's speaking and that a celebrity would pause in their day to help."

Davis, who played his college career at the University of Maryland and went to Dunbar High School in the District always wants to give back to young people in the DMV, many of whom are big Terps or Burgundy and Gold fans.

The goal is to get more people involved in the issue of homeless youth.
