AU Eagles punch their ticket to NCAA tourney

For the second time in four years, the American University women's basketball team is headed to the NCAA tournament.

On Sunday, college men's basketball teams found out when and where they would be playing in the NCAA tournament.

On the women's side, it's looking good for the DC area where three teams are expected to go dancing.

American University became the latest team to punch their ticket to the big dance.

No words, unbelievable, so deserving on this team," says a speechless Patriot League player of the year, Emily Kinneston. "No words, really great."

The championship game against Navy capped a fantastic season for The Eagles who hadn't lost at home in over a year, and ended the regular season with the most wins in program history. Now they'll represent the Patriot league in the big dance.

"Pure joy, can't even put into words work we've put in over last two years," says tournament MVP Cecily Carl. "It's definitely rewarding today to get this win."

With this win they become one of three women's teams in the DC Metro area expected to be part of March Madness.

George Washington, who won their conference tournament, secured the Atlantic 10's automatic bid.

Maryland, which has been a tournament staple under head coach Brenda Frese, is a lock to secure an at-large bid.

To be grouped in with those two programs is special for American head coach Megan Gebbia.

"I feel special," says Gebbia. "GW won their tournament, they weren't supposed to. Awesome for Jen and her staff. Maryland is always going to the dance, that's nice. Just to be a part of it, we want to be equals."

American, along with Maryland and GW, will find out who, where, and when they will play in the NCAA tournament during Monday night's selection show.
