Washington DC — Long time Capitals fans are reveling in the team's spot in the Stanley Cup Final.
Amanda Wilson remembers watching Caps games with her grandparents. Now she cheers from a hospital room or her temporary home in the Midwest.
The former Fairfax resident is in treatment for a rare form of cancer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
Neither distance or treatment have kept her from cheering for her favorite hockey team during their playoff run.
She had a set back last week and found herself in the hospital until right before game 7. The physical therapist was able to get home in time to watch the Caps shut out the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-0.
An an e-mail to me she wrote, "Words can’t express how excited I am that the Capitals have finally made it to the Stanley Cup finals after 20 years!! All I can say is that this team deserves to win! Alex Ovechkin deserves a cup!"
The mother of two added "My husband and I would have been jumping on the stairs of the Portrait Gallery and chanting 'Lets Go CAPS!! We want the Cup!'”
Wilson wears an #AmandaStrong jersey signed by several of the players.
Up until this year she and her husband, Adrian have been to at least one game in every playoff series.
She said they always thought no amount of money would keep them away if the team vied for a Stanley Cup.
"Never thought it wouldn’t be money stopping us," says Amanda. "So, unfortunately looks like we will be missing the games in person but we will be glued to our tv here in Minnesota!"
We will chronicle Amanda's long distance journey following her favorite team throughout the Capitals series with the Golden Knights.
